What to write on a cake when you have the occasion but not the words? A simple formula usually works: a name + the occasion + one warm or funny line. Below are 60 cake lettering ideas grouped by occasion — birthdays, kids and first birthdays, love and anniversaries, 8 March, friends, colleagues and gender reveals. Use any of them as is or just swap in a name: lettering on our bento cakes is free, in English, Russian or Azerbaijani.
You can try a phrase before you even order: in the online cake builder you type the text, pick the cream and lettering colours and see the result straight away. Towards the end of the article you will find tips on how much text fits on a small cake and which lettering colours stay readable against the cream.
Birthday cake lettering for her and for him
A birthday is the most common reason to order a bento cake: we write the name and age free of charge, and you can pick a design in our bento cake catalogue. The safe bet is “Happy Birthday” plus a name. If you want something warmer or funnier, pick a line from the lists below.
For her
- “Happy Birthday, Aysel!”
- “Happy Birthday, Queen”
- “It’s your day — shine!”
- “To the most beautiful birthday girl”
- “Forever 21”
- “Happy Birthday, Mum! You’re the best”
- “Happy Birthday to me” — when you’re throwing your own party
- “Best sister ever”
- “Make a wish”
For him
- “Happy Birthday, Ramil!”
- “Happy Birthday, my man”
- “World’s best dad”
- “To my hero”
- “Happy Birthday, Big Boss”
- “Aged to perfection”
- “Bro, you’re the best”
- “30 is the new 20”
For babies, first birthdays and gender reveals
Kids’ lettering is usually short: a name, an age and something sweet. Our kids’ bento cakes section has more than a hundred designs, and on many of them the words matter as much as the picture — like the hippo cake that says “We are 40 days old”: in Baku, a baby’s fortieth day is a special occasion. We write the child’s name in Latin or Cyrillic letters, whichever you prefer.
For kids and first birthdays
- “Happy 1st Birthday!”
- “Halfway to one”
- “First tooth!”
- “Leyla is 3”
- “Our little princess is 5”
- “Happy Birthday, superhero!”
- “Hello, nursery!”
- “Sweetest baby ever”
- “7 months of love”
For a gender reveal
At a gender reveal the outside of the cake stays neutral and the answer hides in the colour of the sponge or filling — so the lettering should tease, not give it away. Ready-made designs are in the Boy or Girl cakes section.
- “Boy or Girl?”
- “He or She?”
- “Party of three, coming soon”
- “Bows or bow ties?”
Love, anniversaries and 8 March
For your other half and anniversaries
For a partner, short phrases and dates work best: the day you met or married, or the number of days together — as on the “Our 365 days” cake, where we pipe your own number of days.
- “I love you”
- “You make me happy”
- “My favourite person”
- “Our 365 days”
- “Happy 3rd Anniversary”
- “Love you to the moon and back”
- “You + me = us”
- “Love forever”
- “Happy b-day, my love”
For 8 March
For International Women’s Day, people choose spring designs as well as cakes where the words for a mother, a wife or a friend take centre stage. Browse our 8 March bento cakes and remember: it is the busiest day of our year, so book your date at least a week ahead.
- “Happy Women’s Day”
- “Happy 8th of March”
- “Best mum ever”
- “For the loveliest woman”
- “You are my sunshine”
- “Happy Women’s Day, my love”
- “To the lovely ladies of our office”
For friends and colleagues: jokes and thank-yous
For friends, with a sense of humour
A bento cake is often given for the sake of a single line — like the sheep cake with an “I’ve missed you” message. Choose a joke that fits the person: whatever makes your own circle laugh is the best lettering there is.
- “You’re the best”
- “Still young, already a legend”
- “Age is just a number”
- “Don’t worry, eat cake”
- “Bestie, you’re out of this world”
- “This is your cake”
- “Better late than never” — for a belated greeting
- “Officially old”
- “Friends forever”
For colleagues and as a thank-you
For the office, neutral words of thanks work well — like the cake with “thank you with love” that people give to a teacher, a doctor or a colleague. If you are celebrating several people at once, go for a bento set: every mini cake gets its own message.
- “Thank you with love”
- “Thanks for everything!”
- “Best teacher ever”
- “To the best team”
- “With thanks from all of us”
How much text fits, and which language to use
The shorter the lettering, the bigger the letters and the better it reads in photos. The top of a cake for 1–2 people (300–350 g) is small, so phrases of two to four words suit it best. Cakes for 3–4 and 7–8 people have room for a longer greeting.
- The builder lets you add up to three lines of lettering, each up to 40 characters. Split a long phrase across lines — it reads more easily.
- On a “Happy Birthday” cake, keep the name to two words so the lettering stays large.
- Numbers read faster than words: an age or a date can do half the job of a greeting.
The language is your choice: we do the lettering free of charge in English, Russian or Azerbaijani, and write names in Latin or Cyrillic letters. You can mix them too — “Happy Birthday” in English and the name the way the birthday person is used to seeing it.
Lettering, pictures and cream colour
When a cake has a picture, the text and the image share the top. You can put the picture to one side or at the top and the lettering next to it or underneath: on photo cakes, a Polaroid-style photo on the left and a bold phrase on the right carry equal weight. Read more in our article on photo bento cakes. Without a picture the lettering can fill the whole top — a words-only cake is a format of its own, for people who care more about the message than the design.
Choose the letter colour for contrast with the cream: dark and bright lettering reads well on a pale cake, white and gold on a dark or bright one. The builder has 19 cream colours and 12 lettering colours, and each line can have its own colour.
| Cream colour | Lettering colours that work | Example from the catalogue |
|---|---|---|
| White, cream | black, chocolate, red, navy, gold | dark letters on white on the “Sən hamıdan yaxşısan” cake, gold “LOVE” and dark “forever” on cream |
| Powder, pink, lavender, lilac | raspberry, chocolate, navy; white as raised piping | white “happy birthday” on pink, white lines on lilac |
| Mint, sky blue, yellow | navy, chocolate, red | navy “11 months” on a yellow cake with daisies |
| Red, blue, chocolate, black | white, gold, silver | white “i love you” on red, white “to the moon and back” on deep blue |

The surest way is not to guess but to look. In the builder you see the lettering on the cake from above and in 3D; you can drag it, resize it or change its colour, then choose the sponge and filling. A link to the picture of your finished design is added to the WhatsApp order message automatically.
