A bento cake is a small handmade cake created for one particular person and one particular occasion, with its own design, its own lettering and its own box. At Vanilla Cake it comes in three sizes, from 300 g for one or two people up to 1.5 kg for a group of seven or eight, and prices in Baku start at 25 ₼. Below we go through it all step by step: weight, number of guests, prices, fillings and how to place an order.
What is a bento cake
The name comes from Japanese: a bento is a meal packed in a lunch box. The little cake arrives in its own box too: we pack the cake for 1–2 people in a white clamshell box — the classic bento look everyone recognises from photos. It is easy to hand over in person or to set on a table for two.
A bento differs from a regular celebration cake in more than size. You won’t find it in a display case: we make every cake to order for a specific date, and you choose the design and the lettering. It is most often ordered for birthdays, but also for anniversaries, for bringing a new baby home or for no reason at all. When you order, you choose four things:
- Size — for 1–2, 3–4 or 7–8 people;
- Design — from the catalogue, based on your own picture, or built by you in the cake builder;
- Lettering — free, in English, Russian or Azerbaijani;
- Sponge and filling — following the rule “1 sponge + 1 filling”.
Sizes and weight: how many people a bento cake serves
The main question when choosing is how many guests you are expecting. Each size has a fixed price, so you can work out the budget in advance:
| Size | Weight | Serves | Price |
|---|---|---|---|
| Small | 300–350 g | 1–2 people | 25 ₼ |
| Medium | 750–800 g | 3–4 people | 35 ₼ |
| Large | 1200–1500 g | 7–8 people | 60 ₼ |
The price depends only on the size, not on how complex the design is: a cake with just a line of text costs the same as one with a detailed character, as long as they are the same size. You can browse designs in the bento cake catalogue — we can recreate any of them in the size you need, with your own lettering.
On the small cake for 1–2 people the piped cream border runs along the top only; there is none at the base. On the medium and large cakes the decoration can go both on top and at the base — cream shells, for example.
Prices in Baku: bento, bow bento, sets and Cake to go
Besides the classic bento, we offer three more formats. They differ in decoration and in how many people they are meant for. Here is a quick comparison:
| Format | What it is | Sizes | Price |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bento cake | Classic cake with your design and lettering | 300–350 g / 750–800 g / 1200–1500 g | 25 / 35 / 60 ₼ |
| Bow bento | Vintage piping and satin ribbons | 750–800 g / 1200–1500 g | 35 / 60 ₼ |
| Bento set | 3 or 4 mini bentos in one box | 3 pcs / 4 pcs | 75 / 100 ₼ |
| Cake to go | Mini cake in a cup with a spoon and a candle | 2 pcs × 170–190 g / 2 pcs × 270–290 g | 25 / 30 ₼ |
Bow bento
Bento cakes with bows are made in a vintage style: piped cream scrolls down the sides, a pearl border and a real satin ribbon tied into a bow. There is no small size — this kind of decoration needs height, so they only come in sizes for 3–4 or 7–8 people. We match the cream and ribbon colours to your occasion.
Bento set
A bento set is three or four mini cakes in one box, each with its own design and its own message. People choose it to celebrate several people at once or to tell a little story: a drawing on one cake, a date on the second, a joke on the third. You can choose the same sponge and filling for the whole box or a different combination for each cake.
Cake to go
Cake to go is a mini cake in a cup that is easy to take with you: a wooden spoon and a candle are already included. It is sold in sets of two or more, and for office celebrations we put together sets of six or nine cups with different designs. The sponges and fillings are the same as for bento cakes.
A few designs from the catalogue in different formats:
Sponges and fillings
Every bento has sponge and cream cheese inside, and you choose the filling yourself. The rule is simple: 1 sponge + 1 filling.
- Vanilla sponge: banana, strawberry, cherry, raspberry, caramel, caramel with banana, vanilla cream.
- Chocolate sponge: strawberry, raspberry, cherry, banana, caramel, peanut with caramel (“Snickers”), plain cream.
- Red velvet: strawberry, cherry, raspberry.
If you can’t decide, have a look at the sponges and fillings page, where every option is shown with photos.
Design and lettering: from the catalogue or in the builder
The simplest way is to pick a ready-made design from the catalogue and swap the lettering for your own. Lettering is free: a name, an age, a short greeting or a phrase only the two of you will understand. If you are not sure what to write, we have collected cake lettering ideas for different occasions. And if you would like a favourite face or a special moment on the cake, a photo cake is the answer: we print the picture in edible ink, and it costs the same as a regular bento.
The other way is to build the cake yourself in the online cake builder. It works step by step:
- Choose the size — how many people the cake is for.
- Pick the cream colour — the palette has 19 shades.
- Add pictures or upload your own photo — up to three images.
- Write up to three lines of text and choose the lettering colour.
- Choose the border: none, cream pearls around the top rim, or shells. There is no extra charge for the border.
- View the cake in 3D, pick the sponge and filling and send the order via WhatsApp — a link to the design image is added to the message automatically.
